Old Faithful needs a New Timing Belt, what to get?
I'm getting the timing belt done on my 1996 Accord LX, and I have a few questions about parts, and where to shop. I won't be doing the install myself, but I do need to buy ALL necessary parts for my mechanic.
1. When changing out the timing belt, I understand a few things get done like replacing the water pump. I heard a few other things need to be done too but I don't know the exact technical terms, I believe it's along the lines of crank shaft, or cam seals (don't know if that even makes sense). Anyway, that's my first question, what parts do I need to buy for my mechanic when performing a timing belt change?
2. Is it best to buy online? If so, what are the best online stores to buy these specific parts from?
All other advice on purchasing parts or anything would be greatly appreciated!
Respectfully,
Shane
the reason the water pump is changed when the timing belt is done is that the labor is the same. the water pump is driven off of the timing belt and they usually last about as long as the timing belt so almost everyone recommends doing the timing belt and the water pump together.
most shops also recommend doing all of the accessory drive belts at the same time; those are the ones for your alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. I don't know if you have two or three accessory belts on the car but you should change them as well as they are made out of the same material as the timing belt. you'll also need to replace the coolant when the water pump comes off.
you don't need to do the cam seals unless they are leaking oil. they fall into that category of "better off left alone" if they are not leaking. Unfortunately you won't know if they are leaking or not until the timing covers are off during belt replacement. the seals will be a 'dealer only' part and would have to be purchased from a honda dealer if they are leaking.
you can shop the parts; as long as you get a quality belt. The two quality names off the top of my head are Gates and Goodyear. I don't remember which makes the part for Honda but one of them does.
call a honda dealer and ask for prices on the belts and water pump. many have a package price for timing belt parts. then shop online at Autozone and the other parts houses and see how they compare. make you buying decision based on equivalent parts, not on price alone.
also, if you're having a mechanic install the parts, ask them for a quote for the job and a quote if you supply the parts. you may find you won't save any money buying the parts yourself as often times independent shops get the parts through a wholesaler and the cost to you is the same as you would pay at online.
hope that helps
