Quick Checklist of Common Pool Equipment and Heater Problems Before You Call the Technician
If you've ever called over a technician as soon as something's gone wrong, only to have it fixed with the flick of a switch of by plugging something in, you'll want to read this checklist. Whether it's figuring out the pool pump or what's supposed to happen with the Pool Filter, it's really a matter of having the information you need to know the problem.
Extremely Important: If you find a malfunction, do not attempt to fix faulty electrical or gas fittings yourself. This can be very dangerous, and by law these repairs must be done by a licensed tradesperson.
Find and identify the problems as far as you can:
- Be extremely cautious with any equipment which appears to be malfunctioning. Shut down any malfunctioning systems at the power source.
- If the area is wet, do not make physical contact with the electrical power systems in that area. Shut the power off at the mains.
- Call a service person ASAP.
Problems and fixes
1. Water not warm enough:
- Check the timer. Adjust to see if additional time is required.
- Check the filter. A dirty filter will need cleaning.
- Check the thermostat. This may be faulty, which explains the lower temperatures.
- Is the power shutting off while running? You'll need your power supply checked.
2. Water too warm:
- Check the water heater. If it's running and not supposed to be running, turn it off. Look for any obvious signs of malfunctions
- Check the timer. If this has been set incorrectly, you've probably found the problem.
Water quality
Water seems "wrong":
The water may seem "yucky", and just doesn't feel right. This can be a complex problem, and may relate to either chemical or filter problems that situation could also be caused by algae, or chemical imbalances.
- Test the water, and see if you can identify the issues.
- Check the filter for any obvious problems. If clogged, back wash, and do a water treatment.
- Check your pool cleaner, a likely culprit if the water was OK before the last clean.
Water seems acidic
This is a very common problem, and it's fixed by using an alkalinity increaser to raise the pH to 7.2 – 7.6, which is the normal acidity range.
Problem prevention: Things to look out for
- Corrosion of pool equipment: This is proof positive of acidity, possibly over a period of time, and you will need to check the damage. It may be necessary to de-scale or replace affected parts.
- Noises where you weren't hearing noises before: Usually mechanical noises, these may be indicators of a problem. Check the performance of the system, and ask a tradesperson.
- Water level unusually low despite filling regularly: Although faulty systems can cause low water levels, this can also be a symptom of major issues, and the pool may be losing water through the seals. That's not good for the area around the pool, and you'll need to get the situation checked out thoroughly.
All of these problems can be spotted and fixed before they become real problems. You don't have to be an expert, just alert to the issues.
