Are You Taking Care Of Your Water Filter Cartridge?
A water filter cartridge is like a backbone to the water filter. It is this cartridge which decides how many accolades the purifier will get. If it stops working, the water filter is nothing more than a piece of machine without batteries.
A water purifier cartridge sits at the center of the purifier. When the water filled with all types of contaminants like pesticides, herbicides, dust, chlorine, virus etc enters the purifier, the filtration technique employed in it works with the help of the cartridge to remove such impurities from water.
What you get out from the purifier is clean, pure, and fresh water. But what happened inside? Where are all the impurities gone?
They are actually absorbed by the efficient water filter cartridge.
It is similar to your dust bag used in the vacuum cleaner. All the dust collects in the dust bag and that is the reason why you need to replace dust bag periodically.
Same is true for a water filter cartridge. It also needs to be replaced periodically.
But the good news is that :-
(i) The cartridges that comes with a good water purifier, doesn't need frequent replacement. The cartridges employed by a typical multi block water purifier have a long life. They do not need to be frequently replaced - maybe twice in a year depending on the level of impurities your tap water has.
(ii) These cartridges are very easy to replace and they come with detailed instruction manuals as well. This is one of the important criteria to be considered before selecting a water purifier for your home. Who would want to bear extra cost of getting it replaced by a technician? The manual supplied with the purifier should be good enough for a layman to be able to replace the cartridge.
(iii) Since water filter cartridge is part of the maintenance cost of the filter, a good water filter company always ensures to make these cartridges available at a reasonable price. This is another important criteria to be considered while buying a water purifier. Don't get lured by low price of the purifier. Check the recurring maintenance cost instead of the one-time charges. Many companies even offer free extra replacement cartridges at the time of purchase of the filter.

My under-sink water filter stopped working when I replaced the filters. Why?
I have a GE Smartwater under-sink filter that's about two years old. The last time I replaced the filter cartridges, the flow of water was reduced to a trickle. Thinking the new cartridges might be defective, I tried putting the old cartridges back on, but it still barely worked.
The water flows at full pressure for a fraction of a second, then narrows to a trickle. I actually get a little more water by keeping the filter supply line's shut-off valve at about halfway, but it still takes forever to fill up a glass. There are no leaks and the filter cartridges are on properly.
Is there a way to fix this, or is the filter unit itself worn out?
Unscrew the screen filter on the tip end of the faucet and rinse it out.
Many times when working on plumbing debris is dislodged and clogs up that screen.
