Any body maintained at about room temperature is an IR emitter. Human body or any animal is an IR emitter of a fixed spectral distribution. Organisms that vary their temperatures have varying spectra at different times. Things like heated Iron, though it may look cool to the eye emit high flux of IR energy.
Range of IR is from 0.7nanometers to 100nm, as is commonly agreed. For these wavelengths, the temperatures of the emitter should be 4140 degrees Kelvin (3067 deg. C) for 0.7nm (almost Red) wavelength to 29 deg. K (-244 deg. C) for wavelength of 0.1mm (100nm), by using Wien's formula.
Wien's formula states that
(wavelength emitted)(temaperature) = 2.898 mm X degK.
Of course, it is a crude approximation to Black body radiation that I made, and is a good guide for guessing a solution.
The wavelength is actually that of peak emission and gradually falling off at higher and lower wavelengths and for continuous emissions.
It would be interesting to know the unattenuated emission of living Human body that is at 37degC (310 degK). IR emission peaks at 9 2/3 nanometer with interesting consequences. In pitch darkness you can view persons with IR sensors at 9 2/3 nm. If the person is lightly clad so that the IR radiation is reasonably unattenuated, you can view things like pistols or packages of substances he wants to, as dark (non-emitting) spots. Australian government is drawing plans to use this method for screening persons at airports.
