There are several things your Swimming Pool really needs in order to be ideal for swimming. Of course, you will always need water in the pool; that is a no-brainer! But that water needs to be constantly moving so that it doesn't become stagnant. This is precisely the purpose of a pool pump. There are quite a few different types of pool pumps on the market that you can choose from. Some of these brands include Jandy, Pentair, Hayward, and Onga. You can select the brand that best fits your needs.
As stated earlier, circulation in the pool keeps the pool from becoming stagnant. Stagnant water is much more prone to growing algae and bacteria than moving water. The circulating water in a pool should be passed through a basket where dirt particles are strained out of the pool. After the water is strained for dirt and debris, it is then pumped out by spinning the impeller at a high speed.
Several factors should be considered before purchasing a pool pump for the swimming pool. One major considering is the power of the pump. Purchasing a pump that has very little power may not be sufficient enough to keep the pool ideally clean. On the other hand, a pump with too much power can give the pool a whirlpool feel. A typical pool pump has about 1hp.
Another important feature of pool pumps is enery efficiency, because a pool pump will be used all the time; not only when it is turned on and monitored. It will need to be used each day for a good part of the year. This is obviously an important concern, especially with the rise of energy prices. An inefficient pool pump uses too much power, and creates too little circulation, resulting in a large energy bill, and no one wants that.
Before deciding on which pool pump to purchase, it is critical to do adequate research. For some things, you truly do get what you pay for, and this rule applies to pool pumps. There are various manufacturers that advertise online, so it is easy to cross check prices. A little bit of research can go a long way! After reading this article, you may not be a pool pump pro, but hopefully your understanding of these pumps has increased a little bit! Owning a swimming pool is a tremendous responsibility, and one that should not be taken lightly. Shop carefully when deciding upon a pool pump so that the pool will be enjoyed for many years to come!

Pool Pump has No Suction?
I'm getting no suction from my pool pump. All seals are good and I can dump water into the basket strainer and the impeller will suck-up as fast as I can pour. I've back-flushed at the skimmer...everything is fine; water will also flow into the basket strainer while backflushing so the inlet to the pump/strainer is clear.
Oddly enough, I capped-off the inlet line at the strainer just to see if there was an suction directly at the strainer. No suction on the basket strainer lid.
The pump is old and is has a bolt-on impeller with a cast-aluminum housing and impeller (very old style).
Is it possible for the impeller to fail under load or am I not priming it adequately (never had to before). I can see the shaft from the motor constantly spinning so it's good there. Any suggestion?
My best guess is to get at least 3 pool companies come out, look at it, and then give you their opinion and or estimate.
Always get 3 estimates and don't let any of them know you are getting other estimates. That way you can weed out the "wannabees"
After your appraisals, you can then decide if you can fix it yourself or let the pros handle it for you.
Good luck!
