Did you know that your tap water can be full of contaminants, especially if you live in an urban area? These chemicals may include lead, chlorine, fluoride, and pesticides. Tap water can also contain thousands of carcinogenic (cancer-causing) agents. To ensure the safety of yourself and your family, you may need to conduct a drinking water test.
To do so, you should check the reports sent out by your local water treatment plant. Usually these documents are sent out every year. The reports may be included in your water bill, or you can order copies from the EPA website.
If you wish, you can call your local water company and ask them if their tests have found any contaminants. Ask whether or not there may be any pollutants in the environment that could enter the water as it passes from the treatment plant to your neighborhood.
Unfortunately, most water treatment plants in the United States do not test for all known contaminants because doing so is not required by the EPA and it can cost those companies a lot of money. Another way to perform a drinking water test is to purchase a home testing kit of your own. Test the water immediately, as soon as it comes out of the tap, and again after it has been running for some time.
Some drinking water kits will tell you right on the spot if a contaminant is found. Usually, these home drinking water tests will reveal levels of magnesium, sodium, lead, bacteria, fluoride, and chlorine.
However, if results are inconclusive or you wish to inquire about other chemicals, you may need to send your kit to be tested by a professional laboratory. Certain pesticides and other contaminants require their own special test in order to be detected. If you're not satisfied with the quality of your water, you may consider buying a water filtration system.

How long does cycling take?
I have a ten gallon tank with a heater, filter, gravel, a cave, and a live plant. I was just staring my tank and had wanted to get guppies. So I went to the store and bought a water tester that tests nitrate, nitrite, hardness, chlorine, alkalinity, and pH.The pet store worker said to add everything to my tank including the water and water drops, and let the water settle. She said to test it after 24 hours and then if everything was fine to come back and get my fish.
So, I did so and when I went back the next day I showed her my test and she said the water was great. So I told her I wanted guppies to start of my tank. She told me about cycling and said the guppies wouldn't last if I didn't cycle the water. So she encouraged me to buy long fin red minor tetras. I bought 2 on August 3rd. Since then, I added a young pleco.
I tested the water today and everything was safe. I was wondering when it would be a good time to add my guppies. Thanks for helping(:
If your ammonia has risen and fallen, and your nitrites have risen then fallen, with everything reading zero with the exception of nitrates, they should read somewhere between 0-5 ppm. Nonetheless, I think it is safe for you to add your fish if these events have already taken place. It sounds to me like you are cycled! Good luck!
