Can I leave the old liner in my Above Ground Swimming pool and just put the new one over it?
I was wondering if it is necessary to remove my old liner from my Above Ground Pool to put in a new liner. I thought it would be more beneficial to keep my old liner in and just put the new liner on top of it to serve as extra padding and protection. I was just wondering if anyone has tried it or if anyone knew if it would be better to take the old liner out and put the new one in.
No you cannot do it. Couple of simple reasons why if you look at where your liner reaches up to the side of the pool you have a moulded strip that goes around the top edge of it all the way around the pool. This strip hold the top edge of the liner which hooks into it to hold the liner up. It will not hold up two separate liners so your new one would constantly fall off.
One other reason you have fittings that screw in over the liner like your main drain and skimmer plate as well as return fittings. These require gaskets behind them to fit in nicely if you put the old liner behind them they will not fit in properly and you will most likely end up with a very big pain in the ass leak. Trust me you dont want to redo a liner it just sucks.
There is no benefit to putting a secondary liner in at all. If you want to improve the life of your liner just maintain your chemical balance well and before you install it check for small rocks and debris in the pool and any rough edges that might abrade or cut the liner being installed. Also dont forget duct tapeape the seams of your pool wall underneath the liner as it will help with leaks as well as provide a buffer for the liner not to fall into said seams and get pinched or sliced.
I also recommend if you have never installed a liner before or measured one out then to get a professional as if you get the liner measurements wrong or accidently damage it to badly your out a lot of money.
Necessary equipment for a liner install
-Shop vac
-a whole lot of patience
-at least two people to install itduct tapeape for seams
-pennies or lil pieces of the top part of the old liner to wedge in the top mold to hold the new liner in place while it sits in your pool.
Remember take your time its an expensive mistake to make
